Cellars - Archaeological Research

A complete archaeological excavation has never been carried out at Ostrava Silesian Castle. The most extensive research took place between 1971 and 1973, followed by smaller investigations in 1981 and most recently in 2011, in front of the castle.

In 1971, excavations were conducted on the western side of the castle courtyard, followed in 1972–1973 by further research in front of the gate building, where a trench measuring 3 by 18 metres was opened. Beneath the surface, the original sandstone paving was uncovered.

More than 1,400 fragments of ceramic tiles and vessels were discovered, along with numerous metal and bone objects. The finds date from the earliest phases of the castle’s history up to the 17th century. From the castle’s earliest period, fragments of cooking pots, bowls, and jugs were uncovered. The second half of the 15th century is represented by decorated stove tiles featuring various Christian motifs.
